Is it a carry trade If I buy GBD / USD on the foreign exchange market and hold for at least one day

I invested the foreign exchange market for a while and often heard of carry trade. As I know, this term means to buy the same Euro / Yen pair enjoy the difference between interest rates of two currencies. The diffence in the interest of this pair is 3.5% now, but what about the pair GBD / USD, which has only O.25% of the difference?

Any trade that involves borrowing money from one place to a lower rate than he is on loan is technically a carry trade. Banks, pension and hedge funds typically hold a carry trade for at least several weeks but can take several years (yen crosses are a good example), and have more interest in bidding on pairs with differences in higher rates. Bottom line: yes, technically, you are in a carry trade (but not desirable).

Pound Sterling should fall with the US if not more?

What I don’t understand is, how can the USD fall so fast in the FOREX because of inflation, external debt and a recession and the GBP remain a stronger currency when its inflation is only 1-2% points lower than the USD. Its GDP was in negative digits in the Q4 in 2008 and its external debt is over ~376% of it’s GDP as opposed to US’s ~100%.

Also the Euro nations external debts equal to over ~2,000% in GDP how can the Euro remain stable with a currency that contains sluggish economies like Italy, France and Portugal.

Why is the USD being treated like Yugoslavian Currency?

Sorry mate, but the GBP used to give you 1.5 euros and now it is less than 1!!!

When trying to read the pound you have to understand that 35% of UK exports is North Sea Oil.

The UK is a special type of economy, and oil exporting economy, and the fluctuations in the price of oil have terrible implications for its economy and its currency.

What you call Sluggish may well be what is going to save Europe from collapse. We were not in with the big Madoff guys, but now we are not in the same pool of crap.

And then, exchange rates are “relative”…

Also, carefull with debt, there is good debt and there is bad debt.

The US debt is bad because the owners have very little faith left in the country and if they call the loans the country will not be able to cope.

Think of two bank, one has worse numbers than the first, but if people have reasons to mistrust the first and someone calls wolf and everyone asks for their money back at the same time, then the first bank will collapse wereas the second bank will be ok…

The USD deserves to be treated like a Yugoslavian Currency because like Serbia, it thought that the answer to its problems was armed conflict. Imagine if you had pumped 2000bn into the us economy over 5 years instead of wasting it in iraq for no gain…
