While the general perspective is that the U.S. dollar was the "scapegoat" the Forex market in 2009. However, as we look more closely, we notice that the U.S. dollar actually strengthened against some currencies.

As the world changes more exchanged, it is important for us to understand the behavior of U.S. dollar a little more.

In the current economic climate, U.S. dollar strengthens in two ways:

A) good economic data from the United States

2) The bad news affecting the world

Interestingly enough, the last month and a half has seen both scenarios play:

Good economic data U.S.

In the first week of December 2009, traders worldwide have been waiting to see figures on non-farm payroll. The expectations were high. In fact, retailers around the world waiting figures coming from 125K to 135K. Upon release, the job losses 11K "blown away", even the most optimistic estimates. This sent the dollar into a rally.

In addition, recent data on unemployment claims showed that claims for the first time unemployment benefits fell to its lowest level since July 2008 last week that U.S. companies fell further reductions in the end of the year.

The bad news affecting the world

The latest news regarding potential default Dubai World billions of dollars on world markets shocked. This episode saw the dollar strengthen United States against most major currencies. The reason is attributed the "dollar safe-haven status" causing merchants worldwide to "sell first, buy dollars, think later."

More recently, the downgrading of credit for countries like Ireland, Spain and Greece have certainly helped the dollar to expand earnings.

End of 2009

Towards the end of 2009, it seems that the U.S. dollar "has turned a corner" with its impressive gains. However, it would be wise to note that what happened was a typical scenario in the trade season. Most traders and managers funds tend to close their positions by the end of year holidays, leaving little activity in the forex market.

Thus, with a low liquidity, large orders would result in significant volatility swings. In addition, early in the new year, many contracts U.S. dollars have revived again in support of the rising U.S. dollar earlier this year.

the strength of the dollar in 2010?

My overall feeling for the U.S. dollar in 2010 is mainly bearish against the other majors. Doubtless, Bernanke and Geithner have repeatedly come out in force saying they "support a strong dollar." In addition, recent data seems to justify the dollar has indeed turned a corner.

But analysis, the recent strength of the dollar is not supported by fundamentals. Unemployment and budget deficits are at record highs and house prices continue to fall. The debt has also gone through the roof and government spending to stimulate mass.

In fact, based on futures contracts for federal funds, the market is currently pricing in a rate hike by the central bank U.S. in the second half of this year. He is currently a 57% chance of a rate hike at the June meeting followed by a 80% chance of a increase in August.

However, in Forex, it's always a game of "one currency against another." The likelihood of other currencies outperforming the dollar in 2010 remains.

5) Paris; Singdollar: 3.1%

6) Philippines Peso: 2.8%

7) Taiwan dollar: 2.6%

In terms of its currency, China is not pressed to appreciate the yuan, despite many calls from world leaders to do so.

In China the economic situation present, the nation would probably watch the following five factors before deciding appreciating Yuan

1) consecutive quarters of rising numbers of Employment

2) consecutive quarters of rising GDP figures

3) the increase in exports

4) Increase in consumption Domestic

5) When the high inflation becomes a problem

Any rapid appreciation of the yuan could derail economic recovery sustainable by attracting "hot money" and eventually causing inflation.

The good news however, is that Chinese officials are indirectly express willingness to enhance cooperative gradually tightening monetary policy.

Thus, by the end of 2010, the yuan expected to appreciate by about 2% -3% against the dollar.
